Throw a curve  속이다! 

To surprise someone in an unpleasant way, to mislead or lie

My boss threw me a curve when he said I’d have to work late the night of the basketball play-offs.

야구에서 커브볼(변화구)를 던지다에서 온 말입니다. 

 

Throw in the towel (타올을 던지다? --> 포기하다)

To give up; to admit that you’re defeated, to quit

You must not throw in the towel when the other team puts up great arguments.

복싱 경기에서 코치가 흰색 타올을 던짐으로써 경기를 포기하는 경우를 떠올려보면 됩니다.

 

Throw your hat into the ring  (출사표를 던지다)

To announce one’s candidacy for election to office, to issue a challenge

Dave threw his hat into the ring today. He’s running for class secretary

 

Throw your weight around (힘을 과시하다)

To use one’s power in a mean, threatening way, to be bossy or rough

That kid is the new school bully, he likes to throw his weight around.

  

Smell like a rose (건재하다)

To look good in a bad situation ; to avoid a damaged reputation when involved with corruption, to appear pure and innocent

Even though sam causes all the troubles, he comes up smelling like a rose.

 

Snug as a bug in a rug(매우 편한한)

Cozy and comfortable, safe and secure

Grandma tucked her in as snug as a bug in a rug, shut off the lights, and tiptoed out of the room

 

Soft-soap (아첨하다)

To try to persuade by flattery or gentle urging

Maura thought that if she soft-soaped the teacher, he’d cancel the test.

 

Sow your wild oats (속된 말로 씨를 뿌리고 다니다, 젊은 나이에 방탕한 생활을 하다)

To behave wildly and foolishly, especially when young

Can you believe that our quiet, dignified grandmother sowed his wild oats when he was just out of college?

 

Spick-and-span (깔끔한 매우매우)

Extremely clean, tidy neat

The counselor wanted the bunk spicky- and-span before we could get our snacks

 

Spill the beans(알아서는 안 되는 사람에게 비밀을 흘리다)

To give away a secret to someone who is not supposed to know it

Don’t spill the beans, but alex is getting the art award
