#1 Straw that broke the camel's back

: one final problem or misfortune that added to previous troubles proves more than a person can bear

예문 : That last mistake was the straw that broke the camel’s back.

한계에 이르렀을 때 인내심의 한계를 무너뜨리는 마지막 일격을 생각해보면 될 것 같습니다.

아슬아슬 버티고 있는데 무너뜨리는 마지막 실수 혹은 문제로 알아가면 될 것 같습니다.

 

#2 Stuffed shirt

: a self-important person who shows a lot of phony dignity

The chairman of the board is such a stuffed shirt. 

거만한 사람, 자만심/자기애가 넘치는 사람으로 이해할 수 있을 것 같아요.

 

#3 Swallow hook, line, and sinker

: to believe a story completely without questioning it, to be very gullible

I can't believe they swallowed his stupid story hook, line, and sinker.

너무 쉽게 어이없는 일 혹은 잘못된 사실을 믿어 버리는 것을 표현하는 idiom 입니다

 

#4 Swan Song

: the final, farewell performance of an actor or singer ; one’s last words or actions

We are going to the opera to hear madame Scotto’s swan song.

 스완송이라고도 많이 언급을 하는데 가수나 음악가 등의 유작이나 최후의 걸작을 뜻하는 말입니다.

 

#5 Take a backseat

: to be in an inferior position; to take second place to another person who is in control

When it comes to pottery, I take a backseat to Shelly. She’s a whiz.

뒷자리에 앉다라고 직역할 수 있는데 이 idiom은 ~에게 자리를 내어주다. 역할을 맡기고 빠지다 정도로 이해할 수 있습니다.

 빠르게 떠나다, 도망가다라고 얌전하게 해석할 수 있겠습니다.

To accomplish a project successfully, to do a great and thorough job

성공하다, 따내다 정도로 번역할 수 있습니다.

To not believe completely to be doubtful

Sally는 입만 열면 과장이지. 잘 걸러 들어.

 잘 걸러서 듣는다. 액면가 그대로 믿지 않는다.
